A woman is dead after Metro Police reported interrupting her breaking into an extended-stay apartment overnight and attacking another woman with a knife.

Police received a call shortly after midnight about a woman with a knife at Manor Suites, 7230 Las Vegas Blvd. South, near East Warm Springs Road.

When two responding officers arrived, they noticed a woman on a second-story balcony slashing a screen with a knife and trying to get into one of the apartments, Deputy Chief Kirk Primas said. The woman ignored the officers' commands to stop, he said.

As the officers came up the steps toward the apartment, the woman was able to get inside through the window. When the officers got to the apartment, they saw the suspect hovering over another woman, stabbing her with a knife, Primas said.

One of the officers shot the intruder several times before the attacker ran into the unit's bathroom and locked the door, Primas said.

The suspect was taken into custody from the bathroom, transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Officers said the woman who was attacked suffered superficial stab wounds. Three children in the apartment were not injured.

Primas said it was not known what the relationship, if any, was between the women.

The suspect's identity has not been released.
