App: Reuters Sports Reel

Where you can find it: Apple’s “App Store”; Android’s “Google Play” store.

Cost: Free

What is it: Sometimes words and box scores just don’t do sports justice.

Events like the 2014 FIFA World Cup are filled with emotion, drama and perseverance, none of which show up in the box score — but they do on Reuters Sports Reel. The app offers a live stream of Reuters photos for major sporting events along with updated results for users to follow during the event.

For the World Cup, users can choose their favorite teams and receive push-notification updates throughout the match, or they can select any match and quickly browse through a variety of photos showing the drama of a scored goal or the pain of a missed opportunity.

Each one tells a story of the match that you wouldn’t get from a box score.

The app will offer the same service for the Tour de France, U.S. Open tennis and the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix.

Reuters Sports Reel provides the story between the numbers.
