Police: Mom apparently threw 2 kids from window then jumped

Updated Thursday, June 12, 2014 | 9:50 p.m.

A woman who apparently threw two small children from a second-story window of their Las Vegas home this morning and then jumped out may face attempted murder charges, Metro Police said.

The woman and children, a 6-month-old boy and a 1-year-old girl, were taken to University Medical Center, Metro Lt. Ted Laude said.

The children, who appeared to have suffered head injuries, were in critical condition, and the mother may have suffered a spine injury, police said. The mother’s condition was not known.

Police said they responded a little before 6 a.m. to a 911 call from the home in the 3700 block of Spiritual Way, in the area of East Lake Mead Boulevard and North Pecos Road.

Police Lt. Dan McGrath told KLAS-TV the call came after another family member forced open the door in the room with the window, and saw the woman and children on the ground outside.

Police did not offer any motive for the incident.

"We don't know why she did it," said Officer Larry Hadfield.

Maria Cortes, who lives down the street and saw ambulances Thursday morning, described her neighbors as a couple with three children. Cortes said she didn't know them well but said hello from time to time.

"They looked like a happy family," she said.
