Support DOD study of Parkinson’s

I would like to ask all Nevadans to reach out to their elected officials in Congress and ask them to support the Department of Defense Parkinson’s Research Program. Please ask them to support the DOD program at the $16 million level for fiscal year 2015.

The research program, known more formally as the Peer-Reviewed Neurotoxin Exposure Treatment Parkinson’s Research program, is a national research program. It needs our strong support as the program develops and discovers new ways to diagnose, prevent and treat Parkinson’s.

Our troops are often exposed to a wide variety of toxins and other stressors, such as traumatic brain injury, which may lead to the development of Parkinson’s.

Currently, there are approximately 80,000 veterans living with Parkinson’s in the United States. Today, in Clark County alone, there are 22,000 individuals living with Parkinson’s.

Let us support our veterans and everyone who is struggling with this challenging disease.

The author is the Nevada assistant director of the Parkinson’s Action Network.
