Japan protests China paper’s map of atomic clouds

Updated Wednesday, July 9, 2014 | 3:02 a.m.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan has protested to China newspaper cartoon drawings showing exploding mushroom clouds in a map of Japan, calling it offensive.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters Wednesday that such a depiction is intolerable for Japan, the world's only nation to have suffered atomic attacks.

The Chongqing Youth News carried a full-page color map of Japan on July 3, with the cartoon of an exploding mushroom cloud over Hiroshima and Nagasaki and a title saying "Japan wants a war again."

It came out two days after Japan reinterpreted its war-renouncing constitution to allow a greater role for its military.
