Las Vegas school employee faces child porn charges

A 24-year-old man who works at the Spring Valley Montessori School was charged with obtaining and possessing child pornography after turning himself in to federal authorities Wednesday morning, according to Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden.

If convicted, John-Benedict Galang Alcantara could face a maximum of 30 years for both charges and a fine of up to $500,000. The case is being investigated by the FBI and Metro Police.

In April, a Metro detective working with the FBI's Child Exploitation Task Force traced online videos and images depicting child pornography to a web address and Alcantara's Las Vegas home, according to the criminal complaint against him. One of the videos depicted a prepubescent girl having sex with an adult male. The residence was searched by police on June 29, who found cartoon material depicting child erotica on the walls in Alcantara's bedroom.

Another warrant was executed at the Montessori School, a private preschool to eighth-grade campus at 6930 Edna Ave., where Alcantara works as a computer technician. Authorities seized several computers belonging to Alcantara in both places, some of which contained child porn.

Alcantara turned himself in and appeared before a U.S. magistrate in the afternoon, before being released on bond with special conditions.
