Police officer shoots dog after report it attacked two people near downtown

Area of reported dog attacks

A Metro Police officer shot a dog today after it attacked two people near downtown Las Vegas, police said.

Police received a call about 10:15 a.m. from a man claiming a pit bull-type dog attacked him near C Street and Monroe Avenue, said Officer Laura Meltzer, a Metro spokeswoman. While on the phone, the man reported the dog had begun attacking a woman.

When police arrived, the dog had stopped attacking the woman and began leaving the area. While the officers tracked the dog and waited for Las Vegas Animal Control to respond, the dog turned to attack an officer, Meltzer said.

The officer then fired multiple shots, striking the dog, Meltzer said.

Animal Control officials have taken custody of the dog. Both victims of the dog attack received minor injuries, police said.

Metro is investigating the incident.
