Officer, suspect injured in crash, chase that started at Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart

A Metro Police officer and one of two suspects had to be taken to the hospital after a pre-dawn high-speed chase Friday.

Security personnel at a Wal-Mart southeast of West Tropicana Avenue and South Fort Apache Road notified police around 3:30 a.m. that they suspected a person inside the store and another person in a car idling outside of plotting a robbery.

When a Metro officer arrived in his vehicle, the suspects were in their SUV. The suspects rammed the police vehicle in the Wal-Mart parking lot, and then sped off.

The officer in the police vehicle was transported to UMC with non-life-threatening injuries, Officer Laura Meltzer said.

Other Metro units arrived to pursue the SUV, which took off at a "high-rate of speed," Meltzer said.

The suspects led officers into a residential neighborhood southwest of the Wal-Mart before the driver jumped from the moving car.

A male suspect who was driving was taken into custody. The vehicle rolled into unoccupied parked cars before stopping. A female suspect still inside the SUV was taken into custody and was transported to UMC with minor injuries from the collisions, Meltzer said.

Metro Police officers are still investigating the case, and charges have not yet been filed.
