Sources: Corruption charges for California senator

Updated Friday, Feb. 21, 2014 | 11:20 a.m.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Federal law enforcement authorities in Los Angeles are scheduled to announce charges in a long-running political corruption case related to an influential state lawmaker.

Two sources with direct knowledge of the case who were not authorized to speak publically told The Associated Press the announcement relates to the investigation into Democratic state Sen. Ron Calderon. Calderon has denied wrongdoing, and his attorney, Mark Geragos, did not return telephone messages Friday seeking comment.

An affidavit obtained last year by Al Jazeera America outlines a pay-to-play approach in which Calderon used his influence in the Legislature to extract money from those who want favors, including a hospital executive and an FBI agent posing as a film studio executive.

FBI agents raided Calderon's office in the Capitol last June.
