WEST ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a housekeeper on New York's Long Island killed the newborn she gave birth to in her employer's bathroom, then went to a hospital with the body in a bag and tried to get her husband to throw it away.
But a lawyer for the woman, Santos Elena Ruiz Solano, told a judge Friday that the baby was stillborn, premature and the result of a rape. The 26-year-old Solano, who's from Honduras, was being held without bail after pleading not guilty to murder.
Solano delivered Sunday at her employer's West Islip (EYE'-slip) home.
Suffolk County prosecutor Glenn Kurtzrock says the baby was born alive and had skull fractures that came from the "significant force" of something more than being dropped.
Solano's lawyer calls it a "tragic case," but not murder.
