Rep. Doc Hastings to retire after term ends

Updated Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 | 9:54 a.m.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican congressman Doc Hastings of Washington state says he will retire at the end of his term.

Hastings is chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee. The lawmaker has served in Congress since 1995.

He announced his retirement in a statement issued Thursday. The 73-year-old says it's time for voters in his district to choose a new person with new energy to represent them.

Hastings says his family weighed heavily in his decision, especially as he and his wife, Claire, have eight grandchildren in Washington state. He said one of the hardest parts was leaving his wife every Monday morning to fly to Washington.

Hastings is also the founder and chairman of the House Nuclear Clean-Up Caucus.
