An inmate at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center died of a chronic medical condition today, prison officials said.

Jeffrey McKenna was found unresponsive at the prison’s Regional Medical Facility and was subsequently rushed to Carson Tahoe Hospital, where he died, according to the Nevada Department of Corrections.

McKenna, 47, “had been hospitalized numerous times,” department officials said in a prepared statement. It was not clear late Wednesday what medical condition he apparently succumbed to. An autopsy was requested.

Officials said the inmate had most recently been in prison since May 2011 after he was sentenced to as many as 20 years for burglary under the state’s habitual criminal statute.
