Coroner IDs 2 killed on Summerlin Parkway; surviving driver suspected of DUI

Updated Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014 | 9:19 a.m.

Fatal accident

Two people killed Wednesday in a wreck on Summerlin Parkway have been identified as 20-year-old Savanna Gonzales and 31-year-old Frank Anthony Spenia III, both of Las Vegas, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

Authorities initially didn't know what caused a westbound GMC pickup to veer off the parkway before crossing the median just west of Rampart Boulevard and crashing head-on into a Toyota Corolla with Gonzales and Spenia inside. But they now say they suspect alcohol was a factor.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said the driver of the GMC pickup was suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol. NHP is in the process of booking him in absentia at the Clark County Detention Center. Hixson declined to identify the driver.

Gonzales and Spenia were pronounced dead about 4 p.m. at the scene, and the GMC's driver was rushed to University Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

The wreck caused authorities to close Summerlin Parkway into Wednesday evening
