Child dies after found unresponsive in ship’s pool

Updated Monday, Feb. 3, 2014 | 7:50 p.m.

A 4-year-old child has died after being pulled from a swimming pool on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship off the coast of North Carolina. A 6-year-old boy found with the child survived.

Coast Guard Petty Officer Adam SanSoucie said both children were found unresponsive in the pool Monday aboard the ship, which was located 40 miles east of Cape Lookout.

On its Facebook page, Norwegian Cruise Line said an emergency medical team on the ship gave both children CPR, but the 4-year-old died. The announcement said the 6-year-old boy was airlifted with his grandmother and a nurse to a hospital.

SanSoucie said the boy was taken by a U.S. Marine helicopter to Carteret General Hospital in Morehead City, N.C. A public relations official did not immediately respond to a message seeking an update on his condition.
