Holiday travelers making their way back to California today should be prepared for major traffic delays, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.
Southbound Interstate 15 was backed up all the way to Sloan as of Sunday late afternoon, NHP spokeswoman Chelsea Stuenkel said.
Usually during these delays, NHP suggests that travelers use U.S. 95 as an alternative route, Stuenkel said. But due to an incident on the freeway, U.S. 95 south was shut down by Searchlight, near the California state line.
The California Highway Patrol could not provide any further information about the incident other than to note that officers had been on scene since 3:40 p.m. and that as of 5:15 p.m., they were about to lift the closure.
There is no estimated time the traffic on I-15 will clear up.
"This is typical Sunday afternoon traffic after a holiday," she said.
