Las Vegas may not have had a white Christmas, but valley residents can expect a white New Year's.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Tuesday night until early New Year's Day and is predicting snow for elevations above 2,000 feet.

With a cold front coming in on Tuesday and storm moisture early Wednesday, Las Vegas could get from a trace to 3 inches of snow, a weather service spokesperson said.

The heaviest snowfall is expected Wednesday afternoon and evening. Temperatures will be in the 30s all day and will reach the 40s by Friday.

The weather service is advising drivers to be careful on slushy, icy roads and for people to bundle up if they plan on being outside.

The weekend is expected to be sunny with temperatures of about 40 degrees.

Last week, Las Vegas experienced a record-breaking hot winter day of 70 degrees, but to start 2015, it's out with the old and in with the cold.
