letter to the editor:

Adelson shouldn’t have so much pull

A prohibition of gambling on the Internet is a pet project of billionaire Sheldon Adelson. He does not want competition against his mega casino network and has paid millions to politicians and groups to have Congress ban Internet gambling technology.

Adelson’s money reaches some of the highest levels on Capitol Hill. He has the ear of House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. In fact, Boehner placed a personal call to Adelson and apologized for not including the Internet gambling ban in the $1.1 trillion spending bill. But it appears that even though the ban didn’t go through, Boehner and other lawmakers indicated to Adelson that they would do his bidding later. Even Harry Reid, D-Nev., sides with Adelson and said he will vote to prohibit Internet gambling when it comes up again.

That goes to show you money paid by millionaires and billionaires to lawmakers can produce any result they want. The American people once again are being snookered by an elite group of lawmakers in exchange for pieces of gold and silver.

According to many polls, the majority of people want to use the Internet to play games of chance or buy lottery tickets. Billionaires should not be able to influence politicians in order to satisfy their own agendas. Adelson is already making billions of dollars a year from casinos and hotels around the world. When will it be enough? Let us gamble on the Internet to our hearts’ content. The technology is available; I say let’s use it.
