Week ahead promises cooler temps for valley, freezing temps in Pahrump

It looks like Southern Nevada has finally gotten the memo that it's winter.

Temperatures in the Las Vegas Valley are expected to reach the upper 40s and low 50s over the weekend with lows in the upper 20s and low 30s, National Weather Service meteorologist Barry Pierce said.

A hard freeze warning for western Clark County affecting areas including Pahrump and Indian Springs will be in effect through 8 a.m. Sunday, Pierce said.

The warning means those areas should expect temperatures in the upper teens to mid 20s for upward of seven to 10 hours, he said.

Forecasts indicate clear skies over the weekend in the valley with some clouds Monday, he said.

Meteorologists are also forecasting a chance of showers and even a slight chance of snow in the valley Tuesday through Thursday, Pierce said.

The valley is expected to experience a high of 41 degrees on New Year's Eve with temperatures reaching the mid to upper 30s by midnight, he said.

Temperatures this winter have been warmer than normal, and the official climate station at McCarran International Airport tied its record for most consecutive days without temperatures at or below 32 degrees Friday, officials said.

McCarran has gone 378 consecutive days without temperatures reaching 32 degrees, which ties the all-time record set from Dec. 8, 2011, to Dec. 19, 2012, Pierce said.

Official records go back to 1937, he said.

The cool temperatures this week can be attributed to a flow of cool air from western Canada to the southwestern United States, Pierce said.
