Police: Man shot by Metro cop had knives

Metro Police say a 46-year-old man wounded by an officer at the scene of a family argument had a butcher knife in each hand and lunged toward officers before he was shot.

Police Sgt. John Sheahan tells reporters that the man — identified as Paul Herron — underwent surgery at Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center after the shooting about 2:30 p.m. Sunday on a lawn outside a condominium complex several blocks southeast of downtown Las Vegas.

Sheahan says police were called by the man's 72-year-old father, who told dispatchers his son was rampaging through his residence, threatening to kill him.

Sheahan says the man moved aggressively toward several officers before one opened fire.

The officer's name wasn't immediately released. He's on paid leave pending a review of the shooting.
