An elderly man was killed in a fatal rollover crash this morning in the northwest valley, Metro Police said.
A witness reported the incident at about 6:30 a.m. near the 215 Beltway and West Lone Mountain Road, according to a Metro press release.
It appears the compact SUV, a 1999 Honda CR-V, struck the guard rail, left the roadway, and rolled over into a gravel pit in the area of a quarry, according to a press release. The 81-year-old driver did not appear to be wearing a seat belt.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Lt. Patrick Charoen said.
It is unclear if the man died due to injuries sustained in the crash or as a result of a medical episode, Officer Laura Meltzer said.
Traffic on Lone Mountain Road west of the 215 Beltway was affected for about five hours, police said.
