Letter to the editor:

Tax reform will save the economy

If the government had simply sent out checks and issued tax credits instead of wasting over a billion dollars and countless time on the Affordable Care Act, the nation would look a lot different. There wouldn’t be as much unemployment, the national debt would be smaller and the Democrats would probably still have a majority in the Senate.

One thing is sure: The American people are sick and tired of the government wasting our tax dollars and not doing anything to help working families.

How about the government share the wealth a little bit? No, I’m not talking about expanding welfare. I’m talking about full-scale tax reform, the only way to erase the rampant unemployment. We need jobs, not more handouts.

Stop collecting all income-based taxes for the next year. Forget the loss of revenue; the government already spends more than it takes in. This would free up tons of cash for expansion by businesses and spending by consumers. Amend the Constitution to repeal the 16th Amendment, the income tax. Expand the tax base with a national sales tax (fair tax) and call it a day.

The Republicans have an opportunity to do something really big. We need radical change to ensure survival of the U.S. We have to do the tough work now before it gets worse.
