Letter to the editor:

Children’s future won’t be so bright

The letter in the Dec. 13 issue of the Sun titled “Rich contribute to society” showed ignorance of life as it exists today. The writer brags about what a good life he has because he had a good job with a good pension and he has good health care, all because of the generosity of the rich.

The good jobs have gone overseas so employers can pay Third World wages and not pay taxes in the U.S. People today are working two or three jobs to make ends meet.

Companies have stopped funding pensions, even those to which employees could contribute. Instead, the 401(k) has been foisted on workers who now are basically gambling with their retirement on Wall Street. Many employers have even stopped giving matching funds, which was supposed to make the 401(k) palatable to workers.

Another source of pensions used to be unions, an institution destroyed by rich employers.

The good health care the writer brags about is Medicare, established by Democrats over the objections of rich Republicans. His twilight years are good because he is also getting Social Security, a program created by FDR, a Democratic president, again over objections by rich Republicans.

I’m not writing this out of envy, because my husband and I are also comfortable because of Social Security and Medicare. My husband also has a good pension from his union. However, our children’s and grandchildren’s future will not be so comfortable and secure because of the greedy rich.
