First-time unemployment claims up in November

CARSON CITY — First-time claims for unemployment benefits in November were up 12 percent from the same month last year, marking the third consecutive month of increases.

The 16,289 claims filed last month was 2,264 more than filed in October, the state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reported today.

Department Economist Bill Anderson said the increase was dut to layoffs of part-time workers. “This type of claim is more closely tied to the end of temporary, short-term workers as opposed to layoffs of long-term employees,” he said.
