letter to the editor:

A gesture to overcome tensions

The importance of symbolism offers us an opportunity to help our country heal. Every minority group has experienced injustice and had to assert itself collectively in order to gain acceptance and reasonable treatment by the majority. The black community has suffered over the years and still is striving to be treated fairly.

Rather than attempt to rectify all the wrongs committed, we can attempt to change the way things are. A few weeks ago we witnessed a white police sergeant in Portland, Ore., give a huge bear hug to a youngster of color. To me, a picture is worth thousands. Think about the barriers that could be abolished with that single act.

As Americans who came from foreign countries at one point, this act of inclusion could help us overcome all of the injustices of the past. I would suggest that each and every one of us give this gesture serious consideration as a way to overcome all of the divisiveness with which our country presently is faced. Thanks for listening.
