Report: State could save money treating juvenile offenders

CARSON CITY — The state could save $563,000 a year by placing low-risk juvenile offenders at the Caliente Youth Center instead of at a Las Vegas facility with more serious offenders, according to an audit report.

The state Division of Internal Audits said low-risk offenders are mingled with higher-risk offenders at Red Rock Academy, a Nevada Division of Child and Family Services program operating through a public-private partnership with Rite of Passage.

Serious offenses are categorized as arson, assault/battery, robbery, sexual offenses and weapons offenses, according to the audit.

The cost of keeping a juvenile at Red Rock is $326 a day; the cost at state-run Caliente, which has 26 beds, is $172 a day.
