Kitchen fire does $20,000 damage to duplex

A kitchen fire at a one-story duplex near West Washington Avenue and Interstate 15 this morning caused about $20,000 damage and displaced three people, fire department officials said.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded about 6 a.m. to reports of a fire in the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue, spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

Crews found heavy flames in one of the units, he said. Both units were evacuated, and crews doused the fire, which is believed to have started on the stove, Szymanski said.

No injuries were reported.

One adult from the unit where the fire started was displaced, and two adults from the neighboring unit were displaced because of heavy smoke, Szymanski said. The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is providing assistance.

The cause of the fire has not been determined, Szymanski said.
