Mountain West names UNLV’s Boyd the league’s top freshman

UNLV Loses to UNR in Season Finale at Sam Boyd Stadium

UNLV wide receiver Devonte Boyd (83) fights off a tackle attempt by Nevada defensive back Evan Favors (19) after a catch and run at Sam Boyd Stadium on Friday, November 29, 2014.

After leading the nation’s freshmen in receiving yards, Devonte Boyd is the Mountain West Freshman of the Year, the league announced this morning. Boyd is also a second-team all-league pick, joining senior offensive lineman Brett Boyko with that honor.

Boyd, who led the team with 64 catches for 973 yards and four touchdowns, is the fifth league freshman honoree at UNLV. The Basic High grad is the first to receive it since receiver Ryan Wolfe in 2006.

Boyko was moved from tackle to guard midway through the season to help the overall strength of the line, a move that could help his pro future as guard is the position Boyko is most likely to get slotted at by NFL teams.

Boyko will play in the East-West Shrine Game on Jan. 17 in St. Petersburg, Fla. One week later, fellow senior Devante Davis will play at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. Davis was one of three players given honorable mention by the league. Defensive back Peni Vea and offensive lineman Robert Waterman joined him.

The league’s major awards went to Colorado State quarterback Garrett Grayson (Offensive Player of the Year), Utah State linebacker Zach Vigil (Defensive Player of the Year), Air Force kicker Will Conant (Special Teams Player of the Year) and Colorado State’s Jim McElwain, who won Coach of the Year, despite his team not reaching the conference title game.
