Letter to the editor:

Will NRA back this plan?

Nicholas Kristof is right on (“Our blind spot about guns,” Aug. 6) when he compares automobile and gun deaths in the past century. The automobile industry, either voluntarily or by government mandate, has done a tremendous job in reducing the ratio of deaths to miles driven.

Kristof didn’t mention several things that the gun industry could do to reduce the gun homicide rate and still support the Second Amendment.

Auto owners must register their autos when purchased and relicense and pay taxes every year. A person must be at least 16, in most if not all states, and have a license to operate the auto. Here is the back breaker: All automobile owners must carry liability insurance to protect second and third parties from loss caused by the automobile.

How about it NRA, are you willing to recommend similar steps for gun owners to reduce firearm deaths?
