Man dies when he is ejected from car in rear-end crash on U.S. 95

A man was killed when a high-speed crash ejected him over a U.S. 95 overpass early Saturday, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Troopers received a call around 3 a.m. about the crash, which occurred in the southbound lanes of the highway at Flamingo Road. The 25-year-old male driver of a black Volkswagen hatchback was speeding when he came upon a red Honda Civic driven by a 22-year-old woman, NHP Trooper Loy Hixson said. The Volkswagen hit the back of the Civic and both lost control, the Civic veering left and striking the median and the Volkswagen veering right, hitting the outside wall and overturning.

The driver of the Volkswagen was ejected, flying over the retaining wall of the overpass and hitting the ground 50 feet below, Hixson said. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center with minor injuries, but troopers believe she may have been intoxicated at the time and are investigating. It's not yet known whether the man was intoxicated.

The highway's southbound lanes were closed but reopened around 8 a.m., Hixson said.
