PICO RIVERA, Calif. — A wanted parolee who took a woman hostage and held sheriff's deputies at bay for eight hours was killed Saturday along with the woman's husband, who died in a shootout, authorities and witnesses said.
Cedric Ramirez, 24, died after a Los Angeles County sheriff's SWAT team stormed the home in the Los Angeles suburb of Pico Rivera around 1:30 a.m., a Los Angeles County sheriff's statement said.
Ramirez, a gang member with local ties, was wanted for car theft and being an ex-felon in possession of a gun, authorities said. He ran when deputies tried to arrest him around 5:30 p.m. Friday.
Ramirez went to the rear of a nearby home, where he traded gunfire with deputies, then broke a window and crawled inside, authorities said.
Deputies went to the front door to get the homeowners out.
"That's when the suspect started shooting at (police) from inside the house, so they returned fire," sheriff's Lt. John Corina told KABC-TV.
A 54-year-old man outside the home was struck, although it wasn't immediately clear whether he was hit by gunfire from the gunman or deputies.
Deputies managed to pull him from the doorway, but he died at the scene.
The man's 60-year-old wife was rescued after the standoff ended and wasn't injured, authorities said.
