Metro Police have arrested a man suspected in a double stabbing that left one person dead in an apartment complex parking lot.

John Russell, 50, was arrested Monday and booked at the Clark County Detention Center on counts of murder and attempted murder. He is suspected of killing Jeffree Bender and injuring another man on Thursday, police said.

The surviving victim told police that he was sitting on his apartment stairs just after midnight when he heard a call for help, according to a Metro arrest report. He saw Russell and four other men beating up Bender in the parking lot, according to the report.

The man went to help Bender, but when he reached him, he was stabbed by Russell, the report said. When police arrived, they discovered both Bender and the man on the pavement with stab wounds.

They were transported to University Medical Center, where Bender died from multiple stab wounds, according to the Clark County Coroner’s Office.

The second victim identified Russell as the attacker, which led to the arrest, the report said.

Russell is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.
