Despite late surge, Nevada health exchange falls short of goal

CARSON CITY — On Monday, the final day to enroll in the Nevada health exchange, some 7,000 people filed applications, bringing the total to more than 41,000 but short of the goal of 50,000.

Nevada Health Link reported Wednesday that 41,823 people have selected insurance plans through the exchange, and 25,899 had paid their premium. Those who signed up in the final days have until April 15 to pay premiums for health insurance coverage effective May 1.

The board of the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange also voted to allow a special 60-day enrollment period that started Tuesday for those who tried to apply but were stymied by glitches with the insurance website.

Steve Fisher, the program’s interim director, said that “successful enrollment events in Las Vegas and Reno last Saturday" also helped fuel a late surge in enrollments .

A lowered goal of the Silver State Health Exchange was to have 50,000 people enrolled by March 31. The original target was 118,000.

In addition to those who have signed up for insurance through the exchange, another 139,443 low-income individuals submitted applications for Medicaid, which was expanded under the Affordable Care Act.
