The annual high school football showcase to open the season in late August featuring teams from Nevada and Arizona was finalized today.

The Sollenberger Classic will pit five-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman against Arizona’s Brophy Prep on Aug. 22 at Gorman. The next day at Gorman, Reed High of Sparks will play defending Arizona state champion Mountain Pointe.

Gorman lost to Mountain Pointe last year in the border war game. The Gaels also lost to Brophy Prep in the Sollenberger to open the 2008 season.

This is just the second time in the nine-year history of the showcase that a team from the Reno area will participate. Reed is a perennial Northern Nevada power, winning the Northern Region championship the past three seasons.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association and Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association combine to select teams in the matchup.

The event is named after Barry Sollenberger, a respected Arizona high school sports historian. Sollenberger died in 2005, gifting money in his trust to partially sponsor the game.
