Letter to the editor:

What it means to win a war

I take exception to Robert Tobias’ statement that America hasn’t won a war since World War II (“Let soldiers do their jobs,” Sept. 22).

In my opinion, we won the war in Vietnam because it is the only war we walked away from without leaving our military behind, as we have for 68 years in Germany, Italy and Japan, as well as shorter periods in Korea — and as we will do in Iraq and Afghanistan. Nor have we been burdened with foreign aid to Vietnam.

The U.S. can’t afford to win any more wars.
