Fatal shooting

Two teenagers shot and killed a woman Saturday night after they attempted to rob her at gunpoint, Metro Police officials said.

Metro responded to reports of gunshots at about 10:20 p.m. in the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue, near H Street and Monroe Avenue. Officers arrived to find a woman lying on the sidewalk with a gunshot wound and a 16-year-old boy driving away with 19-year-old William Copeland in the passenger seat, police said.

Preliminary investigation indicated that the boy and Copeland tried to rob the woman at gunpoint. When she refused to cooperate, Copeland shot her, police said.

The woman was taken to University Medical Center, where she died. Metro stopped the suspects in their vehicle and arrested both of them.

Copeland was arrested on counts of murder with a deadly weapon, conspiracy to commit murder with a weapon and robbery with a weapon. He was booked into Clark County Detention Center.

Because of the 16-year-old boy’s juvenile status, charges were not made available.

Police urge anyone with information regarding the incident to call Metro Homicide at 702-828-3521, or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or at www.crimestoppersofnv.com.
