Nevada regulators OK $1.6 billion sale of slot maker WMS

CARSON CITY — A company that has worldwide gaming interests won approval from the state Gaming Commission on Thursday to buy WMS Industries, one of the largest manufacturers of video slot machines.

Scientific Games Inc., based in New York, is buying WMS for $1.6 billion and says it plans to expand the business.

Jeffrey Lipkin, chief financial officer for Scientific Games, told the commission it has a “footprint” in 51 countries, providing automatic tote boards at horse and dog racing tracks and running lotteries. WMS is based Waukegan Ill.

Lipkin said the same senior management team would be retained at the Las Vegas location of WMS, which has about 150 employees.

The strategy, Lipkin said, “is to help WMS grow the business.” Scientific employs 3,600 workers.
