Accident

A three-car accident caused by a driver who fell asleep sent three people to the hospital, including two with serious injuries.

Metro Police said the wreck happened at 6:38 p.m. on Durango Drive near Saddle Avenue, which is just north of Flamingo Road in the western valley.

A preliminary investigation indicates the driver of a vehicle heading south on Durango Drive fell asleep and drifted to the center lane, hitting another vehicle into oncoming traffic, said Lt. Dan Zhender late Monday.

A traffic report released early Tuesday said a 1999 Nissan Sentra driven by Gilberto Herrera, 24 of North Las Vegas, was traveling south on Durango Drive when it changed lanes and struck the right side of a 2011 Jeep Liberty, driven by Jennifer Andrews, 28. The collision caused the Jeep to change directions and cross into the northbound lanes of Durango, where it struck a 1991 Volvo 740 driven by Zoran Rula, 36, head-on.

All three drivers were taken to UMC Trauma. Herrera had minor injuries, police said. Both Andrews and Rula had serious injuries.
