A High Desert State Prison inmate was found dead Friday in his jail cell, where he was serving sentences for second-degree murder and attempted murder charges.

Nevada Department of Corrections officers at the Indian Spring prison discovered Ruben Martinez Arroyo’s body at about 4 p.m. in his jail cell that he was housed in by himself. Arroyo died from an apparent suicide, corrections officials said.

Arroyo had been in the custody of the department of corrections since May 2012, officials said. He was serving a 10-years-to-life sentence for second-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon as well as a consecutive five- to 15-year sentence for attempted murder. Arroy's charges were in connection to the Oct. 17, 2008, fatal shooting of Julio Ceasar Gonzalez-Hernandez at an apartment complex in the 3600 block of East Sahara Avenue.
