Updated Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013 | 3:09 p.m.

A vehicle carrying explosives was discovered today in Goldfield after the driver was pulled over for allegedly firing a shot at another vehicle, authorities said.

The explosives were discovered about 6:40 a.m. on U.S. 95, near the Esmeralda County Courthouse, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Dave Gibson said.

The driver had fired a shot at another vehicle in Tonopah, and then the two vehicles continued south into Goldfield, where Esmeralda County sheriff’s deputies pulled them over, Nye County Sheriff Tony DeMeo said.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and a Metro Police Bomb Squad were called to assist.

U.S. 95 in Goldfield was closed to traffic, and residents within 1,500 feet of the vehicle were evacuated, Gibson said. Goldfield is about 190 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

The driver and a passenger in the vehicle have been detained, Gibson said.
