A person walked into the security screening area of the county jail today and attacked a corrections officer with a baseball bat before being subdued, Metro Police said.

The officer was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

The suspect walked into the security room near the Clark County Detention Center lobby about 10:25 a.m. and attacked one of the two corrections officers there with the bat, police said.

The officers apprehend the person, who was taken to a hospital to be treated for an unrelated medical issue, police said.

Las Vegas Bail Bond agent J.C. Barela said he was outside the detention center at the time and saw police bring out a metal baseball bat in an evidence bag. He also witnessed a corrections officer walk outside in a neck brace.

After the attack, social visits at the detention center were suspended, but the jail is expected to reopen to visitors in time for evening visitation at 7:30 p.m.

Metro Police were investigating.
