las vegas 51s:

51s fall in ninth inning for second straight day in PCL playoff series

The Las Vegas 51s were defeated today for the second straight game in the ninth inning by the host Salt Lake Bees in the Pacific Coast League championship series, falling 5-4 when the Bees’ Scott Cousins hit a game-ending sacrifice fly to score Andy Marte.

Salt Lake, just like last night’s 4-3 victory, scored a run in each the eighth and ninth innings in taking a 2-0 advantage in the best-of-five-game series.

After Salt Lake scored in the eighth for a 4-3 lead, Las Vegas scored in the top of the ninth on Francisco Pena’s run-scoring double to tie the game. However, Las Vegas couldn’t hold on with reliever Robert Carson losing for the second straight night.

Las Vegas took an early lead in the first inning when Kirk Nieuwenhuis opened the game with a solo home run. In the fourth inning, Rylan Sandoval had two RBIs for the other Las Vegas runs.

The series continues at 7 p.m. Friday in Las Vegas at Cashman Field in an elimination game for the 51s. If necessary, the fourth and fifth games of the series are at 12:05 p.m. Saturday and Sunday also at Cashman.
