Senior citizen burned after car catches fire in North Las Vegas

Area of car fire

A senior citizen escaped from her burning car early this afternoon in North Las Vegas but not before she suffered critical injuries, the North Las Vegas Fire Department reported.

About 12:10 p.m. numerous callers reported a fire showing from underneath a vehicle being driven near Interstate 15 and Speedway Boulevard. Firefighters arrived 11 minutes later and extinguished the car, which was engulfed in smoke and flames.

Capt. Cedric Williams, a spokesman for the North Las Vegas Fire Deparment, said the driver, a senior citizen, was found outside of the vehicle.

The woman, who had sustained significant burn injuries in the fire, was treated on scene and transported to University Medical Center in critical condition, Williams said.

Cause of the fire is under investigation and damages are undetermined, Williams said.
