The Las Vegas Wranglers opened their 11th season Saturday with a 4-1 victory against the visiting Utah Grizzlies at the Orleans Arena.

Defenseman Greg Coburn’s power-play goal midway through the first period gave the Wranglers the lead for good — and reason to cheer for the 5,809 fans in attendance.

The Wranglers won the game in the second period with their power-play defense, killing off four penalty minutes around the 13-minute mark to keep Utah scoreless. Then, they scored three straight goals to close the period to grab a convincing 4-0 lead.

Geoff Irvin, Matt Tassone and Carlo Finucci found the back of the net for the Wranglers in the second, with team leader Chris Francis assisting on Tassone’s tally. Tassone and Finucci scored 77 seconds apart.

Utah, which outshot Las Vegas 41-22, scored the lone goal of the third. Still, it was a great night in goal for Las Vegas netminder Travis Fullerton, who finished with 40 saves.

The Wranglers return to action Wednesday at Utah. They are back at the Orleans Arena for three straight games starting Friday against the rival Alaska Aces.
