Man pronounced dead after car hits boulder in parking lot

An 87-year-old man was pronounced dead this morning after the car he was driving ran a red light on Sandhill Road and crashed into a landscaping boulder, Metro Police said.

The crash, reported at 8:13 a.m., was under investigation but may have been the result of a medical episode, police said.

The 2010 Toyota Camry was headed north on Sandhill when it failed to stop at a red light at Desert Inn Road, police said. The car hit the median and veered into the southbound lanes before going into the parking lot at Desert Inn Plaza. It came to a stop after it hit a large decorative boulder, police said.

The driver, whose name was not released pending notification of his family, was taken to Desert Springs Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
