The present-day actions of the GOP to make the national deficit the central issue are a farce.
The GOP created this huge deficit in order to destroy and/or severely cut major social programs. They want to privatize Social Security, cut or eliminate Medicare, cut food stamps, etc.
It started with former President Ronald Reagan. His philosophy was government is bad. Free enterprise can do no wrong (how did that work out with the banking industry meltdown?).
Reagan had record deficits. Bush the First had deficits. Bush the Second took the Clinton surpluses ($236 billion in 2000) predicted to eliminate the deficit by 2010 and gave huge tax breaks to the rich, started multitrillion-dollar wars in the Mideast and developed a drug benefit that was not paid for.
The GOP now uses the deficit it created to justify these cuts.
