Three Las Vegas-area high school football teams will advance to the Division I-A state semifinals tonight.
The teams moving on will have to do more than beat the opponents they are lining up against. The key to surviving on this wet and cold Las Vegas evening will be handling the elements. It’s rained virtually all day, creating wet and muddy field conditions, and a chill not common with our brand of high school football. (Remember, we take water breaks each quarter in September in Las Vegas because of the heat.)
Break out the jackets, hats and mittens — it’s going to be a cold one. It should also rain during parts of the three games slated to begin at 7 p.m.
Liberty hosts Green Valley for the Sunrise Regional championship in battle of No. 1 seeds. Liberty has won the past three titles, not losing a league or regional playoff game during the run. The winning team advances to face the Northern Region champ — from the Reno area — next Saturday in Reno.
In the Sunset Region, four-time defending state champion Bishop Gorman hosts Arbor View in the semifinals. And, in the other semifinal, Palo Verde will take on Centennial. The same four teams have played in the Sunset semifinals the past four seasons. The Sunset semifinal winners play each other next Saturday in the other state semifinal, which doubles as the Sunset championship game.
We’ll keep everyone posted all night on scores as they become final. Remember to send us game information and fan photos on Twitter to @lasvegassun using the hashtag #sunstandout.
