Pedestrian killed while walking along I-15

A pedestrian died after he was hit by an SUV while walking along Interstate 15 this evening.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was walking on the highway's northbound lanes near Mile Marker 3 near Jean when "for unknown reasons he ended up in the roadway" and was hit by a Chevrolet Suburban about 6:15 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

His own vehicle was parked just off the highway south of the crash site, Hixson said. It was not immediately clear why he was walking away from the vehicle.

"There's nothing indicating there was an accident or anything else prior to the incident where he was struck," Hixson said.

The driver of the Suburban, which has Colorado license plates, remained at the location after striking the pedestrian. The driver was not hurt.

Two of the highway's three lanes were shut down for several hours while police investigated the crash, causing traffic delays.
