215 Beltway construction zone spawns full-speed rear-end collision with stopped car

A car traveling at full speed collided into the rear end of another car attempting to merge from a lane closed off for construction Thursday night on the 215 Beltway near Warm Springs Road.

The collision occurred about 10 p.m., according to a Regional Transportation Commission traffic alert.

The cones appeared suddenly and ahead of the flashing arrow directing drivers away from the closed-off slow lane, said a motorist who witnessed the accident in a rearview mirror and called the Sun. A car crept forward in the lane near the cones attempting to merge into the stream of traffic when a second vehicle moving at full speed closed in on it.

The driver in the speeding car failed to react in time, colliding into the rear of the other car, the motorist said. The merging car appeared to be pushed sharply off to the side, while the other car shot toward the center median.

No one was injured in the accident, Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixon said.
