Arrest report: Teacher knew relationship with student ‘was wrong’

The relationship between a 24-year-old Las Vegas area high school teacher and a 15-year-old male student involved about 1,000 cell phone text messages over an eight-day period but resulted in them kissing "only two times."

That's what it says on the declaration of arrest report for Amanda Brennan, a Foothill High School English teacher who was arrested Friday on two counts of luring a child and one count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The report also says that when Brennan was interviewed after being read her Miranda rights, she told police she did love the boy "and she knew the relationship was wrong."

So far, no formal charges have been filed against Brennan in Henderson Justice Court. The process of filing formal charges could take up to two weeks, according to a court clerk.

Brennan is free on bail and has been placed on administrative leave pending a full investigation.

Meanwhile, the arrest document provides some details about what authorities learned Thursday after the boy's parents brought their concerns to Clark County School District police.

According to the report, the parents told a police detective they first learned of the relationship Wednesday night when the boy asked if he could go to the movies with some friends his mother didn't know.

The mother then talked to the security guard at their residential area, and the guard told her Brennan's name and age.

The mother told the detective she and her husband then became "concerned that there may be something more going on."

The mother told the detective she and her husband didn't give permission to the teacher to pick up her son and didn't have any knowledge the teacher was taking her son anywhere.

They told the detective Brennan picked up the boy about 9 p.m. and then returned him home about 11:45 p.m. – past his 10 p.m. curfew.

"Brennan did contribute to the delinquency of a minor by keeping the minor out past 2200 hours (10 p.m.) on a school night," the detective wrote in the report.

The report said the boy's father brought 42 pages of cellphone records to the interview. Those records showed the boy's iPhone had numerous calls to and from Brennan's phone, the report said.

With the parents' permission, police examined the boy's iPhone. They found approximately 1,000 text messages had been exchanged between Brennan's phone and the boy's iPhone between May 1 and May 9, the detective wrote.

In an interview with the boy, detectives said they confirmed the teacher had picked him up at his house and then parked in their gated complex.

The boy "also confirmed that there was a loving relationship between him and Brennan as described in the text messages found on his cell phone," the report said. The boy "said that they loved each other, there was only two times they kissed."

One of those times was "when they were cuddling in the back seat of Brennan's four-door Toyota" on May 8, the report said.

They other time was about two weeks earlier, when they both sat in the front passenger seat of Brennan's car "and kissed each other on the lips and spooned.”

  1. "The report also says that when Brennan was interviewed after being read her Miranda rights, she told police she did love the boy "and she knew the relationship was wrong."

It seems she was not advised she had the right to remain silent. And now it will all be used against her.

"There is nothing wrong with this relationship. It is only stupid prudish religious jealous people that make this a crime."

Bob635 -- I agree, but there is a problem when the relationship happened because of school, and the boy's parents objected. The first is contractual, the second is a natural right. Mainly I agree with you there's no crime here, regardless of what the suits in Carson City legislated.

"Indifference to personal liberty is but the precursor of the State's hostility to it." -- United States v. Penn, 647 F.2d 876 (9th Circuit, 1980), Judge Kennedy dissenting

  2. "...when it comes to an adult molesting a child, any of us who say that a molester is a sick individual is right in their analysis."

BChap -- your analysis is flawed to the point of absurdity. There was no child molested in this case.

Winston - "I hate purity. I hate goodness. I don't want any virtue to exist anywhere. I want everyone to be corrupt to the bones."

Julia - "Well then, I ought to suit you, dear. I'm corrupt to the bones." -- "1984" Part II Chapter 2

  3. Bradley in my day the boy would of got a medal, This is why people hate liberals. Stupid laws like this.

  4. "Yep, I figured the same old displaced "jail house lawyer" would be coming forth protecting the molesters of our society."

BChap -- better than making it all up like you and your pathetic ilk do. So far the facts seem to be all this couple only nine years apart did was cuddle and kiss twice.

"This is why people hate liberals. Stupid laws like this."

jaunsanchez -- wouldn't you love to be a fly in the wall when this "victim" is telling his friends all about it.

"'If the law supposes that,' said Mr. Bumble,.... 'the law is a ass -- a idiot.'" -- Charles Dickens, "Oliver Twist"

  5. "And by the way "KillerB", no convict who was ever convicted of a sex crime ever accused me of being a liberal."

BChap -- you've proven my point completely, you make up the facts to suit your conclusions. I've never been in jail (never even been cuffed), never been a lawyer, and I defy you to show where I've ever called you a "liberal" in any post at any time. Since you decided to get personal with me again, expect to be disrespected and ignored here.

"They are both children, and her curious innocence shadows her sin. The parents of the student who was kissed by this young woman have every right to expect a decent upbringing and appropriate learning experience at school. . . .I don't think the punitive arm of the law needs to whack her too hard either."

airweare -- your post put it all in a nutshell. Good one! I would add only what isn't mentioned in this thread -- who was injured here? Unless the parents sue the school district, no one!

"The legitimate powers of government extend to such acts only as are injurious to others." -- Thomas Jefferson, Notes on the State of Virginia, 1781-82

  6. Says something about who is going into teaching. Dr. Phil, Dr. Drew, and Dr. X all say that brains are still developing at age 24--part of why girls of 16 cannot give CONSENT--whether legal or not. It is abusive to take advantage of anyone, REGARDLESS OF AGE, but clearly criminally abusive to take advantage of a child including teens. Don't know why but it reminds me of when Metro started "baiting" 7/11 customers with teens asking us to buy them smokes. I got hit on right away. Not a chance. Boy did this kid try everything to convince me. It takes more than maturity to act adult. Any "teacher" who can't act adult needs to be REMOVED FROM THE CLASS ROOM FOREVER. Sure there are temptations and challenges but you're SUPPOSED TO BE the person who does the right thing and sets an example. Can we find a TEST for "teachers" on this? You know, the kind of test Metro doesn't seem to use during recruiting.

  7. Since when is kissing considered sex ? . According to both parties all they did was kiss and I didn't read anything about heavy petting or sexual intercourse or oral sex, so what is the crime ? , now turn it around , the student is a girl and the teacher is a man , boy that changes everything doesn't it?

  8. Ethics, anyone? Clearly, this young, 24 year old woman was crossing the ethics line with endless text messages and arranging a date. None of it had to do with education, it was the kind of "personal" that led to inappropriate physical contact and having a "date" (without the parent's consent nor knowledge).

Such actions violate public and professional trust and should not ever be tolerated. I speak as a mother of a son and a daughter, and as a teacher. In the past, it was common to call upon parents and teachers to chaperone trips, camping, etc. and that is in a whole different league than going out on a "date". I am glad this young man's parents were vigilent and contacted authorities, before the situation got out of control. Geez.

Hopefully, this 24 year old "teacher" will get some perspective AND professional help soon. Parents want to know and be assured that their children are safe from predatory adults while at school. No young man of age 15 needs this kind relationship, he is most fortunate to have caring parents to help guide him out of harm's way.

Some of the Commenters on this subject really have some minds. Would you permit your own child to have such a relationship? Honestly.

    Blessings and Peace,
