Accreditation agency checks Vegas psych hospital

An independent hospital accreditation agency has made an unannounced visit to the Nevada psychiatric facility at the center of a "patient dumping" investigation.

The Sacramento Bee reports surveyors from the Joint Commission arrived at Rawson-Neal hospital in Las Vegas Thursday.

The agency could help determine whether Rawson-Neal keeps its federal funding and "gold star" accreditation status.

Nevada health department officials say they expected a visit from the commission and welcome the outside perspective.

Rawson-Neal has been under scrutiny since March, when the Bee reported on a patient who was discharged to a Greyhound bus and arrived disoriented in Sacramento.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval said two hospital employees were fired and discharge policies were strengthened after the state reviewed about 1,500 cases of out-of-state transports from the past five years.
